I found the Grocery Store Fairway last week, and I must say the prices are fairly reasonable for New York - but it's crazy... it's going to take me at least a half an hour to get there...

Okay, I realize that it's a different sort of lifestyle here but the grocery stores are too expensive!

I bought a bag of salad and some cheese tonight for six-plus dollars. I'm going to be poor before you know it.

I gave my first Grocery Store Fieldtrip Italian style this afternoon. I'm in Florence and I took a girl who is in my group to Standa... it's a nice supermercati here. I should have taken photos but alas I did not.

Sorry it's been a while since I've posted anything. It seems that I am very busy... I'm thinking maybe I'll go to Stanley's again sometime soon. I'll send everyone an email when I get things organized.

This Friday is Open Studio Night at school... I'll have some GSF magnets available for those of you who want them. Maybe this will be a good way to get more members.

I have a personal food note for you... I love cheese! This weekend I had some very nice blue cheese from Wisconsin... I can still taste it. If I had a car we could go to the Cheese Castle in Wisconsin......

Cub Foods is closing.

Today I went out to the Diversey Target and decided to stop by Cub Foods on the way back to the bus stop. Guess what? I know you already know from the title... they're closing! Maybe we'll have to go there before all their product is gone.

I apologize for not keeping up with the field trips. I've been very busy and I don't seem to have any spare time.

Keep checking in though, I may get my second wind soon!

I am looking at my calendar and trying to figure out what day would be good to go shopping. I am thinking that an week day afternoon/evening would be good... I promise to figure out something soon!

New Trader Joe's!!!

I was wandering around yesterday and I saw that they are building a new Trader Joe's on Ontario. I think the address is 50 W. Ontario, just northeast of the Weber Grill a few blocks. Maybe when it opens we can have a field trip there.

I am a big fan of their horseradish humus and I also like to buy pecorino romano cheese and prosciutto there.

I've had some suggestions such as up to Devon or to Broadway and Argyle to get Thai groceries... There's also the new Sunflower Market on North Clybourn (nice but expensive). There is also Isaakson's to get seafood!

Here are a few photos from our trip to Stanley's plus a picture of the spring rolls that Chris made with his purchases.

For those of you who missed out too bad! Hopefully we will be scheduling another fieldtrip in the near future.

We did manage to stop by Whole Foods on the way back from Stanley's and sampled a nice swordfish steak (no cookies though.. sob).

I am happy to report that Grocery Store Fieldtrips has received its first endorsement (I see the infomercial coming)!

Jim Zanzi - Photographer, Author, Artists, Graduate Advisor, Mineral Point Home Owner and all around swell guy has disseminated the mission of GSF to all of his advisees!

I am working on logos for publicity and buttons (maybe even T-shirts!)... if anyone has a graphic design background and wants to help let me know.

The Details:
We're going to Stanley's.
We will meet at 37 S. Wabash at Noon! Meet in front of the building.
We will be taking the train and bus so bring your U-Pass.

I would suggest that before you go make a list of things you might need. I'm not sure what exactly is in season (I'm not that well organized!) but I guess we'll find out. I have a tendency to overbuy when I go there so if you have a list of just what you need that would be good.

If you have a shopping cart you could bring that too, but sometimes it's hard to get them through the turnstiles on the train.

Bring recipes too if you want to share.

Stanley's next Sunday!

I'm going to put together a trip to Stanley's next Sunday. We can also do a "walk by" of Whole Foods if you wish (they have good samples).

I think we will probably meet at School around noon. I will give specifics later (what to wear, exercises to work up those biceps for carrying all that produce etc...).

Grocery Store Fieldtrips Day Two!

My new friend Chris is going to investigate a Thai grocery store on Broadway and Argyle. I'm still working on getting everything put together for these trips.

I think Stanley's is going to be our first fieldtrip. It has a good selection of produce at a reasonable price. Once I have the date and time figured out I will post it. If the times don't work for some of you we can always go again.
